History

In 2004, several members of the Northern Neck community felt there was a need for a local Boys & Girls Club to serve the needs of the many at risk youth ages 6-18. There was concern that many of the youth who would be involved in the Boys & Girls Club did not have access to character building activities after school, that they return home to empty houses at the end of the school day, do not have help with homework, and are unsupervised until parents/guardians arrive home from work.

The Boys & Girls Club leadership group, headed by the late William Knull Jr. Capt. USN (Ret.), approached the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Four years later in April 2008, the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck opened its doors to the youth of the Northern Neck community in space provided by the Lancaster County Public Schools within the Lancaster Middle School.

In February 2009, after less than a full year of operation, the youth of the Northern Neck community have a Boys & Girls Club facility of their own located at 517 N. Main St in Kilmarnock. This facility currently houses a Club House that includes a large Game-Room, Technology Lab, Art Room, Learning Center, and a Kitchen Area. In October of 2009 a beautiful teen center was constructed. In May of 2011, the old warehouse was converted into a beautiful Education/Recreational Complex that houses a full gym, fitness area, skateboard park, and education/stage area.

While other organizations provide many outstanding programs for young people, what makes our Boys & Girls Club different is:

What we offer:

We have a dedicated youth facility

  • The Boys & Girls Club is a place - an actual neighborhood-based building - designed solely for youth programs and activities.
  • We are open daily after school and during the summer months, when kids have free time and need positive, productive outlets.

We have a Professional Staff

  • Every Club has trained youth development professionals, providing positive role models and mentoring services.
  • Volunteers provide key supplementary support to all programs offered.

We are available/affordable to all youth and families

  • We are for all kids therefore we keep our fees low so that all youth and families can afford our programs where they may lack access to other community programs.
  • Membership fees are affordable at $15 per semester (Winter/Spring-Summer-Fall) or $45 for the year per child.
  • Additional scholarship and other financial support can be provided on an as needed basis.
  • We desire to turn no child away.
