Phillip A. Mumford
Executive Director & Chief Professional Officer
of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck

Phillip A. Mumford, a former executive of the Boy Scouts of America, has taken the helm of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck, according to Edward Fuehrer, Board president.
Mumford assumed his duties as Chief Professional Officer and Executive Director on Sept. 12 after a 14-year career with the Boy Scouts, serving as a member of the Heart of Virginia Council Executive Staff.
"We are so pleased that Phillip has joined our team”Fuehrer said. "His experience, his insights, and his wisdom will be great assets to this Club.”

Mumford said he never thought about leaving the Boy Scouts until he saw the job listing for the Boys & Girls Club opening in The Rappahannock Record and thought about the incredible difference he could make in children’s lives.
"I am keenly aware that the scouting program changes lives,” Mumford said. "If the Boy Scouts can make a difference working with kids for an hour a week, just think what a difference you could make if you had more time. At the Boys & Girls Club, the children and teens are here every weekday for several hours.”

Another aspect of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck that attracted Mumford is that "they are able to partner with so many other organizations to fulfill their mission,” he said.

Mumford was already familiar with the programs of the Boys & Girls Club because his daughter, Ainsley, 8, a third-grader at Lancaster Primary School, is a member of the Club.

Mumford began his career as a juvenile correction officer and youth counselor. But he soon realized he "did not want to work with youth on the inside of the fence,”he said. He wanted to help them so that, hopefully, they would never go to a juvenile facility. That is when he joined the Boy Scouts of America, serving in several capacities in his career there.

Mumford himself is an Eagle Scout and has received several awards from the Boy Scouts of America. He is active in the Kiwanis Club of the Northern Neck and is past president of the Kiwanis Kids Foundation.

He is married to Diane Mumford, Lancaster Circuit Court Clerk. The Mumfords have been residents of Kilmarnock for 11 years,
